Michael J. Walsh (Bachelor of Social Science, University of Cape Town; M.A., & Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara) is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion, as well as a member of the Asian Studies Program at Vassar College. He teaches courses on the history of Chinese religions, and method and theory in the study of religion. He is particularly interested in monastic life, colonialism and religion, the production of sacred space, and cultural geography. His book Sacred Economies: Buddhist Monasticism and Territoriality in Medieval China will be published by Columbia University Press in March 2010. He is currently working on two other book projects, the first on Buddhist monastic space, the second on religion and politics in China.
