Chinese and Japanese are offered in the Department of Chinese and Japanese. For information, contact Ms. Qiu in Sanders Classroom 325, ext. 5253. Arabic, Hindi and Korean are offered under the Self-Instructional Language Program. For information, contact Ms. Feroe in Chicago Hall, Room 121, ext. 5729.

Majors are encouraged to pursue a language directly relevant to their geographical region of emphasis. Competency in one Asian language through the intermediate college level must be achieved and demonstrated by completion of relevant courses or special examination In every case, the language chosen to fulfill this requirement must be approved as part of the student’s overall plan of study. Normally, a maximum of 4 units of Asian language study above the introductory level will be counted toward the 12 units for the major.

The Department of Chinese and Japanese offers elementary, intermediate and advanced courses in Chinese and Japanese languages. A list of these courses can be found in the Vassar online course catalogue.

Majors whose study focuses on regions of Asia in which area languages are not a regular part of the Vassar curriculum should consider alternatives for fulfilling the language requirement, such as the Self-Instructional Language Program (which offers Hindi, Korean, and Arabic languages, among others).
